celebrating our 2025 EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION WINNERS

 Dr. Bert Stevenson is a visionary educator and administrator, serving as Secondary Assistant Principal at East Community High School, where he leads the Freshman Academy and has driven a 20% rise in attendance and academic performance while reducing suspensions. A Temple University graduate and former student-athlete, he earned his M.Ed. and Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University at Buffalo. Dr. Stevenson is a devoted mentor, co-founding the Omega Gents Mentoring Program and the Next Move Foundation, empowering underprivileged student-athletes. Committed to family, community, and transformative education, he inspires students to thrive academically, athletically, and personally. 

Jared, a masterful guitarist, composer, arranger, and educator who teaches at the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts. Jared is considered a cornerstone of Western New York’s jazz scene. An award-winning performer, Jared collaborates with famous musicians and leads acclaimed quartets, Tetragon, performing originals and jazz standards. His versatility spans jazz, funk, hip-hop, classical, punk, and heavy metal, and he has appeared at major festivals including the Rochester International Jazz Festival and Queen City Jazz Festival. As Music Department Chair at BAVPA, he inspires young musicians while maintaining a thriving performance career, recording projects, and private guitar studio in Buffalo.

Dr. James Newton is a dedicated educational leader with 32 years of service in public education, including roles as assistant principal, principal, and superintendent. Named the 2009 New York State Middle School Principal of the Year and a National Principal of the Year finalist, Dr. Newton joined Bishop Timon–St. Jude High School as principal in 2018. Under his leadership, enrollment has nearly doubled, transforming a school once facing closure into a thriving community. A certified Bullying Prevention Trainer and creator of the Non-Verbal Intervention Program, Dr. Newton’s passion is building positive school climates where every student can succeed. 

 Fabiola E. Friot was born in Colombia, South America, and brought her dreams to life in the United States through perseverance, education, and service. A two-time master’s degree holder—from the State University of Buffalo and St. Bonaventure University—she has dedicated her career to empowering children, families, and communities through education and social work. As a Bilingual Social Worker with the Buffalo Board of Education and a community advocate, she uplifts others with compassion and cultural pride. Fabiola’s leadership, humanitarian spirit, and lifelong commitment to equity have earned her numerous awards and the deep respect of those she serves. 

 For the past forty-four years,  April has dedicated her life to enlighten Special Education services. April earned an BS in Special and Elementary Education from D’Youville University and my MS in Special Education from SUNY Buffalo State. April spent her early years working at Aspire Children’s Center to her current position as an 8:1:1 teacher for students with autism at BPS, nurturing  growth in literacy, esteem and self confidence highlights her passion. April celebrates the progression in every child. Inspired by Frederick Douglass, April strive to help students find freedom through reading. April is reluncant to retire because she states, "there’s still important work to be done!". 

Eileen Maruscakis a proud middle school science teacher at Notre Dame Academy. Eileen acquired an B.S. in Elementary Education and an M.S. in Educationwith a concentration in Reading from Buffalo State University. For over 23 years, She has inspired students across grade levels, fostering curiosity and confidence through hands-on, inquiry-based learning. Eileen is passionate about creating individualized instruction that meets each student’s unique needs, encouraging them to reach their fullest potential. Her mission is to cultivate a love of learning and build meaningful relationships with students, families, and colleagues every day.

With 32 years of dedication to education, Jennifer Panzica inspires young minds as a fourth-grade math and science teacher at Roosevelt ECC #65. She began her career at Holy Spirit School before joining Buffalo Public Schools in 1997, teaching second grade at Native American Magnet #19 and later shaping students at Roosevelt Early Childhood. A proud Buffalo State University graduate with both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Elementary Education in which she excels in teaching mathematics. As Jennifer works towards her retirement, she states that she will continue to bring students to concerts at the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, golfing and bowling get togethers along with her family. Including, a RV journey from Buffalo to California.

 Marc Adams is a dedicated Culinary Arts educator in the Career and Technical Education program at the Emerson School of Hospitality. A proud Buffalo Public Schools alumnus, he inspires confidence, creativity, and resilience in his students—encouraging them to explore new dishes, ideas, and possibilities. Known affectionately as “Dad” or “Unc,” Marc mentors with empathy, fostering growth through his Changing Perspectives program and athletic coaching. Beyond the classroom, he champions equity, wellness, and community engagement. A husband, father, Deacon, and minister, Marc lives his belief that teachers don’t just educate—they inspire, transform, and turn the impossible into the possible. 

 JoAnna Wingo is a visionary educator with over 20 years of transformative service in nonprofit, public, and charter schools. As Co-Founder and Dean of Culture at Persistence Preparatory Academy, she champions equity through innovative programs that empower students, families, and educators. A trailblazer in social-emotional learning, restorative education, and trauma-informed practice, JoAnna’s leadership has shaped safe, inclusive learning communities across Western New York. Through JoAnna Lonell & Associates, she trains and inspires educators nationwide. Her unwavering commitment to advocacy, innovation, and student success ensures that education remains a force for healing, empowerment, and lasting social change. 

 Brunilda Velez has dedicated four decades of service to Dr. Antonia Pantoja School of Academic Excellence #18, where she proudly serves as a Teacher Assistant and Transportation Coordinator. Beginning her journey at 23 as an ESL Assistant, she has since supported students across every grade level with compassion and commitment. Brunilda’s role extends beyond academics—she fosters strong relationships with families, coordinates transportation with care, and builds bridges between school and community. Deeply devoted to nurturing both learning and life skills, Brunilda treasures seeing generations of students thrive under her guidance, embodying the heart and spirit of School #18. 

 Dinorah Santos is a proud Puerto Rican educator, advocate, and community leader who has dedicated over 20 years to the Buffalo Board of Education. A devoted mother and grandmother, she champions childhood education and youth empowerment through her work with Journey’s End and her small business, Dinorah’s Art & Crafts. From mentoring migrant families to helping establish the Hispanic American Veterans Monument at Buffalo’s waterfront, Dinorah’s impact resonates across generations. Recognized with numerous civic and humanitarian awards, she continues to uplift her community through service, advocacy, and her unwavering belief that every child deserves opportunity and hope. 

 Greg Plumb, a Nichols School alumnus  1996, has been shaping the Middle School community since 2003 through mentorship, character-building initiatives, and a student-centered approach. As Assistant Head of School for Student Life 2021–2023, he strengthened school culture, championed Restorative Practices, and fostered trust and accountability. Returning as Head of Middle School, Plumb continues to prepare students for academic and personal growth while launching transformative programs like A-LEG and the Heart Initiative. A celebrated coach, he led Nichols’ varsity boys basketball to a state championship. Outside school, he enjoys the outdoors, chess, and family life with his wife and four sons. 

Jennifer Tyner, a proud Afro-Latina educator in Buffalo Public Schools, serves as a Substitute Teacher at Lewis J. Bennett High School, where students affectionately call her “Auntie.” She uplifts student athletes, spreads positivity through daily hugs, and actively supports student success by funding Senior Dues, sponsoring events, and providing prom attire. Beyond education, Jennifer holds an MBA and owns The Notary Lady 716, LLC. She serves her community through Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and as a Coach with the Westside Baseball League. A devoted mother and GiGi, Jennifer inspires students to embrace growth and reach their fullest potential. O

 Coach Phil Butler, a proud Buffalo native, is a respected leader in basketball and community mentorship. A member of the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, he inspires young men through sports, character building, and confidence development. From his early ministry work as a teen to his tenure with the Buffalo Board of Education, Coach Butler has guided students toward on-time graduation, enlistment, enrollment, or employment. As Burgard High School’s Varsity Lead Assistant Coach and Coordinator of Basketball Operations, he’s led teams to multiple championships while serving on community boards and in church leadership, modeling a life of service and intentional development. 

 Robert P. Harris is the Director of Career & Technical Education for Buffalo Public Schools, bringing over 25 years of dedication to preparing students for college and career success. A Buffalo State alumnus with dual master’s degrees from Canisius College, he holds New York State certifications in School Building and District Administration. Robert’s leadership extends beyond the classroom as President of WNY Zone 1 ACTEA, COEA Member-at-Large, and Big 5 Representative on the NYS ACTEA Board. Passionate about curriculum development, industry partnerships, and workforce readiness, he advocates for Career & Technical Education as a transformative tool for students and communities. 

 Velynka S. Flunder is a dedicated educator with over 20 years of experience inspiring young minds. A proud Buffalo native and lifelong learner, she holds degrees from Buffalo State University and Medaille College and is completing her Educational Leadership program at Canisius University. Currently a second-grade teacher at the Charter School for Applied Technologies, Velynka fosters creativity, kindness, and academic excellence. Beyond the classroom, she serves through Compeer of Greater Buffalo, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, and the WNY National Pan-Hellenic Council. Passionate about service, education, and family, she continues to lead with purpose and grace. 

 Dr. Hall is a dedicated educational leader with over 20 years of experience in the Buffalo Public School District, currently serving as Principal of Harvey Austin School 97. A proud Buffalo native and McKinley High School graduate, he has also served as Assistant Principal at Hamlin Park School 74 and Dr. Lydia T. Wright School 89. A committed member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Dr. Hall supports youth empowerment and community engagement. Devoted to his wife Jacqueline and their children, Cameron Jr. and Makaila, he values family, sports, and lifelong learning, inspiring excellence throughout Buffalo’s educational community. 

 Pastor Giles has dedicated nearly 50 years to fostering peace, justice, and opportunity in Buffalo. As President and CEO of Back To Basics Outreach Ministries, he mentors students across the city, guiding them through life’s challenges. He also leads VOICE Buffalo, advocating for social and economic justice, and serves as Administrator for the Stop The Violence Coalition. A champion of Restorative Justice and prisoner reentry in Erie County, Giles sits on multiple boards, including Catholic Charities and Youth Visionaries. Honored by mayors, county executives, and community organizations, he is a tireless servant and transformative leader.
